This season, the Jazz Discovery Series will take residence in the theatre’s prestigious lobby space; which is where the Ritz previously held its popular Jazz Jamm series in early to mid-2000.
Recognized as one of jazz's pre-eminent vocalists, young Sofija Knezevic is one of the most significant singers in jazz today. While her singing is steeped in tradition, her improvisational virtuosity and creativity are breathtaking. Sofija graduated from University for Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, in the class of Dena De Rose. She has won many awards and scholarships including the Marianne Mendt Jazz Award,Tesla Award for the achievements in Music, Unesco Scholarship for young talents, Golden Siren award, and was recently chosen in 2013 for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program which identifies outstanding, emerging jazz artists and composers.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family band consisting of seven blood brothers who began their musical training at the tender ages of four and five by their father, jazz trumpeter/band leader Kelan Phil Cohran (Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan, Sun Ra). Together they have toured throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, African and South America playing with a wide variety of artists including; Prince, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). They’ve performed at Coachella, WOMAD AU, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Sydney Opera House and Carnegie Hall.

Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Greenville, NC, contemporary jazz vocalist Christie N. Dashiell returned to hone her skills at Howard University and, later, The Manhattan School of Music. Dashiell’s history includes performances with Howard’s premiere vocal jazz ensemble, Afro-Blue. She has also performed at the Kennedy Center as a participant of the 2010 Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency program, Lincoln Theater in Washington, D.C, and as a part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People program.

Catherine Russell is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was born in Panama, emigrated to New Orleans and then New York City, becoming a legendary pianist/bandleader/arranger/composer and Louis Armstrong’s long-time collaborator and musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering bassist/guitarist/vocalist and holder of advanced degrees from Julliard and Manhattan School of Music, who performed with international Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams and Ruth Brown. It is no surprise based on her pedigree, Catherine Russell is a one-of-a-kind musician and vocalist. A graduate of American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Catherine toured the world, performing and recording with David Bowie, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, Paul Simon and many others.

The Charles Turner Quartet has performed at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center for the Generations in Jazz festival for 2 consecutive years. He also Released his Debut Album " Dreamers" Produced by Grammy Award winning Drummer Ulysses Owens at Jazz at Lincoln Center March 2014. Appearing next at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he will be a part of the 2015-16 Season at is Debut concert in the Appel Room in May 2016. Turner graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma on a full scholarship. During his time there Charles had the wonderful opportunity to study and perform with Grammy Award–winning drummer and educator Terri Lyne Carrington, Dave Samuels, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Joanne Brackeen.
